{"id":9229,"date":"2021-11-30T15:22:01","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1374566"},"modified":"2021-11-30T15:22:01","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:22:01","slug":"why-i-call-bullshit-on-the-apple-cars-rumored-2025-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=9229","title":{"rendered":"Why I call bullshit on \u201cthe Apple Car\u2019s\u201d rumored 2025 release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>If you\u2019re a fan of \u201callegedly,\u201d \u201cpeople close to the source,\u201d and other rumor-inducing phrases \u2014 any coverage about the Apple iCar should be your cup of tea. <\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>This week, we heard again the claim that an Apple autonomous electric vehicle, aka Project Titan, will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-18\/apple-accelerates-work-on-car-aims-for-fully-autonomous-vehicle?sref=I5jUJbND\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">successfully produced by 2025<\/a>. The question is\u2026 is the car really coming and can we trust the new timeline?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First thing first then, is Apple working on car tech? Yes, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patentlyapple.com\/patently-apple\/2021\/11\/apple-wins-a-project-titan-patent-relating-to-a-light-field-head-up-display-that-projects-information-to-the-driver-on-a-wind.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">100%<\/a>. But is it working on producing its&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/some-company-built-virtual-apple-car-from-tech-giants-patents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/some-company-built-virtual-apple-car-from-tech-giants-patents\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">very own car<\/a><span>, under the moniker iCar, or something more futuristic? Hmm, maybe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Honestly, there isn\u2019t anything concrete about Tim Cook and the gang launching a car, as the rumors are mostly built on various car-related patents that don\u2019t necessarily have to result in the \u2018iCar.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>However, for argument\u2019s sake, let\u2019s assume the <a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/still-no-apple-car-but-soon-apples-car-crash-detection-iphone-apple-watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/still-no-apple-car-but-soon-apples-car-crash-detection-iphone-apple-watch\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Apple Car<\/a> is coming, can we believe the 2025 timeline for its production? I don\u2019t think so.&nbsp;<span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>I hate to be a party-pooper, but I\u2019m afraid we\u2019ll have to wait a&nbsp;<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">lot<\/i>&nbsp;longer. To think that we\u2019ll go from <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/6-levels-autonomous-self-driving-explained-tesla-waymo-autopilot\">largely Level 3 with some Level 4 capabilities<\/a> to holding meetings in our cars without a steering wheel in the next three years is laughable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What, are you going to buy a car with a detachable steering wheel? Of course, you could put down a deposit and hope for the best, but you can\u2019t buy one unless it\u2019s legal to drive it (err, ride in it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let\u2019s look at the US; I\u2019ve been writing about AVs since 2014, and since that time&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/transportation\/autonomous-vehicles-self-driving-vehicles-enacted-legislation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">29 states have passed legislation<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;relating to the use of autonomous vehicles. That leaves 14 states without legislation \u2014 either it\u2019s pending, or they have yet to take any action.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Current laws are&nbsp;<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">only<\/i>&nbsp;around the right to pilot test vehicles under certain conditions,&nbsp;<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">not<\/i> the right to own or drive an autonomous <span>Even more, before they\u2019d go to market, there would need to be cohesion between the laws in bordering states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>I mean, can you imagine selling a car that owners can only use in some states? I can\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>Considering how slowly the legal system moves in general, I can\u2019t imagine a mass expedition of AV law reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So, any Apple car would only be a prototype at best, and its design would need to meet the appropriate guidelines for pilot testing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oh, but Apple\u2019s hired all the EV wunderkinds&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you want news about the alleged Apple Car, a favorite pastime of internet sleuths is sifting through the LinkedIn profiles of new hires at Apple. Bonus points if they\u2019re people who\u2019ve previously worked at an automaker. The recent hiring of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/apple-steals-former-tesla-autopilot-director-icar-dream-team\">Christofer \u201cCJ\u201d Moore<\/a>, previous director for Tesla\u2019s Autopilot software attracted a lot of attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But Apple\u2019s also lost a fair slew of people who\u2019ve previously worked on self-driving tech over the years. These include&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dougfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Doug Field<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who left Apple for Ford,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dave-scott-1b4177\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dave Scott<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who went from car robotics into health tech,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jaime-waydo-7520a122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jaime Waydo<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who went from AV safety at Apple to start an autonomous vehicle software company, Cavnue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And, let\u2019s not forget Apple apparently (yes, more speculation) had&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/312294\/tim-cook-hundreds-employees-working-apple-car-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1000 people working on Project Titan<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;in 2015, only to have a mass exodus of staff layoffs in 2016. Clearly, this is a department in flux. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In other words, there\u2019s a pool of highly specialist practitioners in niche tech who move around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I can\u2019t help but think of the time Apple is wasting on onboarding and dealing with personnel matters, especially when it should be all hands on deck\u2026 if a car were to be released by 2025. Must cause delays, just sayin\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Apple\u2019s battery design efforts are in their infancy<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Back in December 2020, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-apple-autos-exclusive-idUSKBN28V2PY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> an Apple insider told them that the company was making a new \u201cmonocell\u201d battery design It could \u201cradically\u201d reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle\u2019s range. It could also bulk up the individual cells in the battery and free up space inside the battery pack. As a result, more active material could be packed inside the battery, giving the car a potentially longer range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was also alleged that Apple is planning to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) in this battery. This is to address the safety problems of lithium-ion batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"12.270627062706\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Strange, if true.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Tesla already uses iron-phosphate for medium range cars made in our Shanghai factory.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 A monocell is electrochemically impossible, as max voltage is ~100X too low. Maybe they meant cells bonded together, like our structural battery pack?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1341484482302533635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">December 22, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Elon Musk responded to Apple Car rumors by questioning the idea of Apple making a monocell battery. Sure, they have enough for making AirPods, but a typical car (the Earth-killing type) uses between 50 and 150 semiconductors. Even worse, a modern electric vehicle can use up to&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">3,000 chips<\/i><span>. And the auto industry has been&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/buying-a-new-car-maybe-wait-for-the-chip-shortage-to-end-first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/buying-a-new-car-maybe-wait-for-the-chip-shortage-to-end-first\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">plagued with shortages<\/a><span>&nbsp;all year!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even if Apple is a prized chip customer, it\u2019ll be in line with all the other automakers. These are carmakers who are <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/would-you-buy-a-car-without-its-promised-tech-bmw-latest-to-make-compromises-due-to-chip-shortage\">shipping cars without some of their functionalities<\/a> due to the chip shortage. Or, leaving them on the factory floor awaiting that final ingredient before they can hit the showroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Semiconductor companies are scrambling to build factories stateside to catch up on production. But this takes time.&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/2330-TW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;threw serious money earlier this year to build a factory near Phoenix, but even this won\u2019t start producing chips until 20025.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Apple is undeniably making auto software. And sure, it might make something to test it in. But I\u2019m not convinced this translates to car building. Or getting into a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/lucid-motors-living-the-dream-with-ev-charging-innovation\">Lucid Motors<\/a>, as some claim.
