{"id":9241,"date":"2021-11-30T23:00:31","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T23:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1374569"},"modified":"2021-11-30T23:00:31","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T23:00:31","slug":"qualcomms-betting-on-ai-to-take-on-apple-and-googles-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=9241","title":{"rendered":"Qualcomm\u2019s betting on AI to take on Apple and Google\u2019s chips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Apple has been in a league of its own when it comes to developing processors for phones and embedding its own AI-powered experience.<\/p>\n<p>But this year, Google has thrown its hat in the ring by debuting its <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/heres-how-the-pixel-6s-google-tensor-challenges-other-android-cpus\">indigenous Tensor Chip<\/a> to give the Pixel 6 a platform to showcase the company\u2019s vision for smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>This massive push by tech giants into the chip game means that Qualcomm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/global-smartphone-ap-market-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">once a leading player in the smartphone industry<\/a>, will face more competition than ever. Plus, the battery efficiency is 2.8 times better than the Snapdragon 888.<\/p>\n<p>And in addition to that, there\u2019s a new 3rd gen sensing unit that can enable ultra low-powered voice and connectivity experiences.<\/p>\n<p>So now that we\u2019ve seen the new chip\u2019s AI specs, let\u2019s take a look at what it can mean for phone makers, developers, and consumers.<\/p>\n<h2>What can the new AI unit do?<\/h2>\n<p>Vinesh Sukumar, Head of AI\/ML Product Management at Qualcomm, said the new AI unit can handle a lot more workload easily. The company developed a demo with video imaging company Arcsoft, where a prototype phone based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 could simultaneously perform face detection and apply the face bokeh effect.<\/p>\n<p>Sukumar said that the new tech allows the software to detect more than 20 points on the face, so app makers can apply effects even when there\u2019s a bad angle or small field of view.<\/p>\n<p>The new sensing hub enables the chip to have always-on camera experiences for face and object detection while consuming low power.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a new \u2018always secure\u2019 module within the sensing hub that allows apps to conduct financial transactions in a safer way.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is Qualcomm partnering with companies for different experiences?<\/h2>\n<p>Until now, Qualcomm chips usually provided phone makers with a canvas to draw their own paintings. It has previously worked with manufacturers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizchina.com\/news\/leica-says-goodbye-to-huawei-xiaomi-smartphones-are-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Huawei and Xiaomi<\/a>. But this is a rare occasion when a chipmaker is working with a camera maker exclusively.<\/p>\n<p>Sukumar said that Leica was a key partner in developing AI to capture high-quality and dense images with great spatial details. He said that this tech will enhance dynamic range and clarity in pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Qualcomm also partnered with health organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asante.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Asante<\/a> to showcase an app that records your voice for 30 seconds and detects your stress levels, asthma condition, and even COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>This is not entirely novel as Israeli startup Vocalis <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/this-ai-powered-app-detects-covid-19-using-just-your-voice-with-80-accuracy\">has achieved a similar feat with an app<\/a>, but in Qualcomm\u2019s case, all the processing is done locally to keep the user privacy intact.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important partnerships is with <a href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hugging Face<\/a>, an open-source startup working on language-based machine learning models. Qualcomm demoed a smart assistant which uses sentiment analysis to classify the most important notifications for you. Plus, you can look at a summary of notifications based on their priority.<\/p>\n<p>The assistant can also answer questions like \u201cwhere\u2019s my dinner meeting?\u201d and \u201cwhen should I leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All this reminded me of Google Assistant. But \u200b\u200bQualcomm\u2019s Vice President and Head of AI Software, Jeff Gehlhaar, told me that this partnership will bring a broader portfolio of use cases. I\u2019d be very interested to see an assistant that has better capabilities than Google Assistant, so bring it on Qualcomm.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s in it for developers?<\/h2>\n<p>Qualcomm said this year it\u2019s introducing support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tensorflow.org\/guide\/mixed_precision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">mixed-precision instructions<\/a> in its SDK, so developers can make their AI models run faster while using less memory.<\/p>\n<p>However, the biggest change is to introduce \u200b\u200bNeural architecture search (NAS) for Qualcomm chips. NAS enables data scientists to optimize a model for particular hardware without manually training it. They can also put constraints on the model\u2019s size or other parameters based on the use case.<\/p>\n<p>The chipmaker is partnering with Google Cloud to provide the backbone for this NAS offering. Qualcomm will use t<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/vertex-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">he Google Vertex AI solution<\/a> for managed machine learning, so developers can train their models for its chips easily.<\/p>\n<p>This partnership will allow developers to tune their models not just for mobile, but for Qualcomm\u2019s XR, IoT, and automotive solutions as well.<\/p>\n<h2>A battle with Apple, Samsung, and Google<\/h2>\n<p>Apple always had its own chips on its iPhones, while Samsung uses a mix of its indigenous Exynos processors and Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon processors for its devices.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Google ditched Qualcomm for the first time, so the competition in the chip market is definitely heating up.<\/p>\n<p>The US-based chip giant will need to show its processors are as capable as Apple\u2019s, Samsung\u2019s, or Google\u2019s, if not better. And for that, it\u2019s putting up a lot of onus on its AI chops.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll be amazing to see companies like OnePlus, Samsung, or Xiaomi using Qualcomm\u2019s new gear to bring out an AI experience that we\u2019ve not seen on iPhones or Pixels.
