Canal, this left over 300 vessels at both ends of the canal from being able to move. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lloydslist.maritimeintelligence.informa.com\/LL1136229\/Suez-Canal-remains-blocked-despite-efforts-to-refloat-grounded-Ever-Given\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lloyds List<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;estimated that the stranding held up about $9.6 billion worth of trade along the destination.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Today, the container ship is <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellenicshippingnews.com\/ever-given-container-ship-crosses-suez-canal-under-tight-emergency-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">back afloat<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, albeit under strict safety measures and extensive repair progress.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span href=\"https:\/\/www.colpipe.com\/news\/press-releases\/media-statement-colonial-pipeline-system-disruption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Colonial Pipeline Company&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">temporarily shut down all of its pipeline operations in response to a hack involving ransomware.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Colonial Pipeline is the largest US refined products pipeline system. 5,500 miles of pipeline run from Texas to New York. The company carries 45% of the East Coast\u2019s fuel supplies and services seven airports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DarkSide_(hacker_group)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DarkSide hacker group<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;admitted to the attack. Colonial&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/news\/uspolitics\/biden-colonial-pipeline-ransomware.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">paid the hackers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;roughly 75 Bitcoin \u2014 or nearly $5 million \u2014 to recover its stolen data,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In response to the attack, DarkSide left this message on their now-defunct dark website:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;We are apolitical; we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government, and look for other motives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Our goal is to make money and not create problems for society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a result, the US government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/news\/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-administration-has-launched-an-all-of-government-effort-to-address-colonial-pipeline-incident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">issued a number of emergency actions<\/a> in response to the attack. Besides the obvious security investigations, they included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A targeted, one-week waiver, allowing multiple states to temporarily use non-compliant fuel to boost available supply.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An \u201cHours of Service\u201d waiver to provide greater flexibility to drivers transporting fuel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An emergency effort to determine rail operators\u2019 capacity to help transport fuel from ports inland and identify potential actions to enable this effort.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Silicon Semiconductor Chip shortage&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2021 was the year of the&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/buying-a-new-car-maybe-wait-for-the-chip-shortage-to-end-first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">semiconductor chip shortage<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Its causation is varied but includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reductions in chip purchases by auto OEMs in response to COVID-19 shutdowns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Increases in the use of semiconductors in PCs and gaming devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A fire at<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/businesscorporate-business\/renesas-plant-resumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;Japan\u2019s Renesas Semiconductor Manufacturing<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, responsible for 1\/3 of semiconductor chips manufactured.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company usually produces about one-third of microcontroller chips embedded in cars globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The problem is also indicative of bigger supply chain problems and the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">inherent fragility of overextended supply chains.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Automakers use about 10% of the chips on the semiconductor market. A typical car (the Earth-killing type) uses between 50 and 150 semiconductors. However, a modern electric vehicle can use up to&nbsp;<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">3,000 chips<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Oof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All year we\u2019ve heard stories of cars and other vehicles sitting in factories ready for rollout\u2026 except for their computers and processors. We only need to look over the pond to the UK to see what happens when there\u2019s a people shortage. After the Brexit vote, an&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-northamptonshire-57587253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">estimated 20,000 truckers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;went back to Europe and never returned.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Industry officials claim the UK is around 100,000 truck drivers short, leading to problems like supermarket stock and fuel shortages. The government ended up&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/news\/britain-deploys-army-to-deliver-fuel-amid-panic-buying-and-shortages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">getting the army in<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;to drive fuel tankers. That\u2019s one use for people\u2019s tax dollars\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lithium<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As fossil fuels are phasing out, lithium is a crucial ingredient in the making of&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/why-we-cant-charge-lithium-ion-ev-batteries-in-few-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lithium-ion batteries<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, it\u2019s time-consuming to extract and refine to meet the demand for lithium-ion batteries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, as automakers accelerate their electric vehicle ambitions, a lot of lithium is needed to reach set targets.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ihsmarkit.com\/research-analysis\/lithiumion-battery-materials-evolve-suppliers-face-new-challenges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">IHS Markit<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, in 2000, about 9% of lithium produced was used for batteries. By 2020, this share rose to 66%, and it is forecast to reach over 90% by 2030.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/lithium-shortage-causing-bottleneck-in-energy-transition-8211-lilac-solutions-ceo-66769303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> David Snyder, CEO and director of Lilac Solutions Inc.:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There\u2019s a huge amount of funding flowing into battery and electric vehicle manufacturing. And that\u2019s really good news for the industry and for the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is money flowing into lithium, but much of that investment has been speculative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s been in projects that lack the credible technology pathway to develop into commercial production. This ensures diesel engines comply with environmental nitrogen oxide emissions standards.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In transport, urea sells under the brand&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaa.com\/breakdown-cover\/advice\/adblue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AdBlue<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">India, Korea, and Australia all import their urea from China.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, in November, there were reports of urea <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/skorean-drivers-panic-buy-urea-after-china-tightens-supply-2021-11-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">panic buying<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;in South Korea by diesel vehicle owners after China&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/opendata\/soaring-fertilizer-prices-add-inflationary-pressures-and-food-security-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">restricted urea export until June 2022<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. 40% of South Korean cars run on diesel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From Australia\u2019s National Road Transport Association,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-03\/diesel-crisis-adblue-shortage-supply-china\/100673482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Warren Clark attributes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;the export cut to trying to manage an internal price hike in fertilizer in local China and potential trade issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Australia is scrambling to establish&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-13\/australia-approaches-nations-for-adblue-supplies\/100695094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">new urea supply chains<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;with Japan, Indonesia, and the UAE to stop diesel truck stoppages wreaking havoc on the logistics industry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/infiniumco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Infinium<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;CEO and Co-Founder Robert Schuetzle:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Packed ports, idling cargo ships, and supply chain delays are very likely to continue in 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To combat the increase in smog and pollution at the busiest ports, we anticipate that transportation providers and governments will more rapidly shift the focus to greener alternatives\u2014including electric solutions and clean electrofuels that can replace traditional fossil-based fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I think 2022 will be a bumpy ride, folks, and we\u2019ll be here to bring you the latest news and analysis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/2021-was-the-year-of-supply-chain-pains-in-mobility\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you experienced a shortage of particular foods in the grocery store or been waiting ages for that car you ordered at Christmas last year?
