{"id":968,"date":"2020-11-09T10:36:41","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T10:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1327166"},"modified":"2020-11-09T10:36:41","modified_gmt":"2020-11-09T10:36:41","slug":"forget-tesla-volvo-will-have-electric-trucks-ready-in-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=968","title":{"rendered":"Forget Tesla, Volvo will have electric trucks ready in two years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As electric passenger cars (EVs) become an increasingly common sight on our roads, there\u2019s one classification of vehicle that is still firmly attached to fossil fuels: trucks.<span>&nbsp;I don\u2019t mean SUV-type trucks, I mean the real deal: semi-articulated trucks, haulage trucks, 18-wheelers, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, that looks like it will start to change for real over the next few years, as companies start to produce electrically powered large-scale commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Swedish automaker Volvo Trucks announced that it will start taking orders in Europe for its range of electric heavy-duty work vehicles next year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/volvo-trucks-electrifying-heavy-duty-trucks-in-2021-2020-11?international=true&amp;r=US&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider reports<\/a>. The company says the vehicles will go into production in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <a class=\"p-channel-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2020\/11\/05\/what3words-is-about-to-make-millions-of-car-satnavs-more-accurate-and-easier-to-use\/\">What3words is about to make millions of car satnavs more accurate and easier to use<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Depending on how the batteries are configured, the trucks could have up to 186 miles (300km) of range and a gross combined weight of up to 44 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvotrucks.com\/en-en\/news-stories\/press-releases\/2020\/nov\/volvo-trucks-launches-a-complete-range-of-electric-trucks-starting-in-europe-in-2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">announcement from Volvo Trucks<\/a>, it\u2019s currently testing electric versions of its FH, FM, and FMX trucks. They won\u2019t accelerate like a Tesla, and they certainly won\u2019t handle like one.<\/p>\n<p><span>But if you live on planet Earth, you sure should be excited. <\/span>With trucks, busses, and lorries contributing a quarter of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions of all road transport in the EU, reducing the sector\u2019s reliance on fossil fuels is vital for reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/transport\/vehicles\/heavy_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">EU emissions targets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/transport\/vehicles\/heavy_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">EU regulations<\/a> are setting the trucking industry a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 15% from 2025 and 30% from 2030 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>While Volvo\u2018s trucks are still a couple of years away, some local governments are already plowing ahead with similar solutions. Earlier this year, the UK\u2019s fifth largest city, Glasgow, announced that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2020\/10\/23\/scottish-city-to-get-worlds-largest-fleet-of-hydrogen-powered-garbage-trucks-syndication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting a fleet of hydrogen-powered refuse trucks<\/a> \u2014 and I refuse not to be impressed.
